Might a Powderfinger reunion be in our future? The ARIA-winning '90s and 2000s Australian alt-rock giants definitely have fans wondering what's ahead after some teasers started popping up on social media and on the billboards of major Aussie markets of late.

Let's take a closer look.

What Is Being Teased About Powderfinger?

Earlier this week, the band's Instagram was wiped, minus one post.

The reel shows a cypher of scrolling letters, numbers and symbols that are written in white across a red background. Occasionally, some of the text turns from white to black. Amid the seemingly randomized combination of letters, complete words such as "memories," "arias," "summers," "flights," "interviews," "members," "crew," "hours" and more, each accompanied by a number.

A new Instagram account under the moniker @thereturnoftheelectrichorsemen also shared the same reel in a non-collaborative post. If that title sounds familiar, it's because it's a reference to the closing track on Powderfinger's 1996 album Double Allergic.

Over the course of the past week, a similar cypher, this time with with darkened lettering against a white backdrop, has appeared on digital billboards in major Australian markets such as Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Are There Any Other Clues?

On The Return of the Electric Horsemen Instagram post, the caption reads, "Time marks everything." Meanwhile, a caption from one of the posts from Powderfinger's Instagram page seems to elaborate on that thought in a more cryptic manner.

It reads:

Time keeps the ledger. Every rehearsal. Kilometre. Flight. Soundcheck. Stage. Encore. Album. Failure. Accolade. Conflict. Audience. Every year. Every minute. Every second. The numbers never stop. They accumulate. They become evidence. Not fame. Not hype. Not headlines. Time. Everything else is a variable. Add enough time to enough variables and something extraordinary happens...

Yet another Instagram teaser is captioned,

Red means run, son. Numbers add up to…. Nothing? or Something…

And a visit to their website shares the same red cypher with a prompt to join the band's fan club by submitting your contact info.

A History of Powderfinger and What the Teasers Might Mean

Powderfinger formed in Brisbane, Australia in 1989, but didn't start really hitting the charts until their 1994 debut album, Parables for Wooden Ears. The fact that the Instagram teasers have spawned an account using a song title from Double Allergic is no coincidence. This year marks the 30th anniversary of that album, which could suggest either a special reissue or perhaps a reunion tour spotlighting that record.

The band issued seven studio albums over the course of their career and had massive success in their Australian homeland. They also made inroads at radio in the U.S. starting with 2000's Odyssey Number Five that spawned the singles "Waiting for the Sun" and "My Happiness." Powderfinger won 18 ARIA Awards out of their 47 nominations, which made them the Australian act with the third most ARIA victories.

The group's final album, Golden Rule, arrived in 2009, but by April of 2010, they announced that they would be disbanding following a final tour. They played their final show of that run on Nov. 13 2010.

In May of 2020, Powderfinger reunited for a one-off charity reunion performance. That was soon followed by the release of a collection of previously unreleased material, but things have remained quiet as far as any further activity until this week.

Will it be a reunion, an anniversary reissue or something else? Stay tuned as Powderfinger's socials have definitely been ramping up the anticipation for "something extraordinary."

Some reunions stick, others are short-lived, but inevitably the return of a popular band is often most welcome.
